Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
-
Do you take insurance?
No. We don’t bill insurance for your visits with Dr. Simmons. Instead, we use a direct primary care model. See the next question to learn more!
-
What is DPC (Direct Primary Care)?
DPC is a modern approach to primary care that puts patients and relationships first and is rapidly growing in popularity across the country. Instead of billing insurance for each visit, we charge a flat, affordable monthly membership fee. This is what allows for longer visits, easier access to your doctor, and truly personalized care. Also, there are no surprise bills or rushed appointments.
-
If you order imaging, prescriptions, or referrals, will my insurance cover that?
Yes, most of the time. While we don’t bill insurance for your visits, we work with it every day to help you use your insurance benefits for things like imaging, lab work, medications, and specialist referrals. We’re experts in helping you navigate the system when needed.
-
Do you offer same-day appointments?
Absolutely. Same-day and next-day appointments are a core part of how we care for our patients. You shouldn’t have to wait two weeks when you’re sick or worried about something. Good care should be timely, and we make that a priority.
-
Do you treat menopause, perimenopause, and hormone-related concerns?
Yes! Dr. Simmons is the only Menopause Society Certified Practitioner in the New Braunfels area, offering specialized, evidence-based care for menopause and perimenopause. He also treats low testosterone and other hormone-related issues in men. We take a thoughtful, whole-person approach. Unfortunately, many hormone clinics treat every problem like a hormone imbalance. We don’t. We look at your situation comprehensively.
-
Do you help with weight-loss?
Yes! We offer an evidence-based, comprehensive approach to weight loss that includes support for nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress. When appropriate, Dr. Simmons also prescribes weight loss medications such as Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, Liraglutide, and others.
-
Can I use HSA funds to pay for DPC?
Short answer: Yes!
Longer answer: Many patients have used HSA funds for DPC in the past, but it was a gray area. Thanks to a federal law signed in July 2025, it is officially allowed as of January 1, 2026. -
What's included with my DPC membership?
Your membership covers a wide range of care. Check out our “Services” page for details.
-
Do I still need insurance?
Yes, we recommend it. While DPC covers your primary care needs, it is not a replacement for insurance. You’ll still want a health plan for emergencies, hospitalizations, surgeries, or specialty care. DPC and insurance work best when used together.

Where is Simmons Family Medicine Located?
New Braunfels, Texas! One of the best places I know.

Do you do peptide therapy?
Yes. But not what you’re thinking. Please read the rest of this answer. Peptides are an enormous and diverse group of naturally occurring molecules that can have profound effects on our bodies (good and bad). Peptides like insulin and GLP1s are an essential tool that Dr. Simmons uses every day. Peptides can be very dangerous. Insulin is one of the more dangerous medicines a doctor can prescribe if used incorrectly. Peptides should subjected to rigorous safety and efficacy testing. Common peptides on the market like BPC-157 and TB-500 have not been. So Dr. Simmons does not recommend this kind of untested peptide therapy. We don’t know what the dangers are. And we don’t know if they’re worth the money that health spa is charging you.
